Man Ray
born 27 Agustus 1890 ; died 18 Novenber 1975
Man Ray ( his real name was Emmanuel Runitsky ) was born in Philadelphia , and studied at the surrealist and abstract movements of the 1920 and beyond . He started photography in 1915, having been introduced agreat many photographers including Bill Brandt, Eugene Atget and Cartier-Bresson. Ray did’t invent the photogram technique but he made it famous. He called them rayographs or rayograms,Three dimensional opaque and translucent objects were placed on sensitised printing paper and exposed to light. He also experimented with solarisation of positives and negatives.Describing his work , he sid that he began as a painter and photographed his work,eventually destroying the paintings and keeping only the reproductions.He eventually saw painting as an obsolete form of expression, which photography would replace once the public was visually educated. One of his admirers, Jean Cocteau, called him the’poet of the darkroom’.Man Ray’s original photographs now sell for huge sums of money.
